Virtually all of today’s iPad apps are programmed as so-called native apps. Re-using their software code on Android or any other operating system is not and will not be possible. Publishers wishing to be present with native apps on several platforms will need to pay for the development of just as many apps.
This flies in the face of what we have seen in the last few years in consumer and enterprise software with ever more software products provided via the web, operating in any modern browser and thus truly across platforms.
With Android expected to grab a major piece of the tablet market and with other operating systems such as RIM’s or webOS having a fair chance of seizing a significant piece of the cake publishers’ apps must be technically able to run across several platforms and not just on the iPhone OS.
