Picard, North American representative at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, anticipates that generalist journalists will become “less and less necessary for news organizations whether they be print or broadcasting.” They’ll be replaced by journalists with a strong understanding of a content area or specialism, with degrees in subjects such as social policy, energy or international relations, he explained… “They understand the field and ask deeper questions. It’s those kinds of specializations where journalists can deliver value where the internet will never do,” Picard said.
