How does a startup nonprofit news site survive in media-rich San Francisco with an anemic budget and no full-time journalists?

For the San Francisco Public Press, the answer is one project at a time.

“We meet at least weekly in the office with the whole team to go over story angles, new reporting and how the package is going to come together with graphics, maps, photography and design,” said Michael Stoll, the founder and executive director. Those teams range in size from four to seven people, who handle everything from the writing and photography to data journalism. Stoll added that the Public Press usually works on two large projects at a time.
