One week it’s social networking and paywalls, the next it’s apps and tablets, the next its niche publications and side events. Most of these things aren’t bad ideas, in and of themselves, but they tend to be about the structures and systems surround journalism, not about the journalism itself. Too often, this can amount to chasing trends. Instead of searching for sustainable business models, what if we were searching for sustainable practices.
A very intuitive insight (this quote-out), although not much else new in the rest of the article beyond a nice summary of issues. Still, it is refreshing to hear other voices talking about the actual practices of journalism, as distinct from today’s more typical “making money from journalism” or “everyone as journalist” discussions that, typically, miss the point.
I have just, through this post, discovered Josh Stearns and the FreePress media reform movement of which he is part. Worth watching.
