John Winsor, who is on the journalism school advisory board — made up of media professionals — said the media landscape has changed and the school has not done a good job adapting.
“This is a terrific opportunity for the university to close something and rebuild something greater,” Winsor told the regents.
Gary Burandt, an advertising executive who is on the advisory board, said that in job interviews, he hears from CU students – and those at other journalism schools across the country – that they’re ill-prepared.
“They are bright, hardworking and well-schooled in the basic principles of theory and advertising,” he said. “However, in interviews, they say their coursework did not prepare them for the dynamic media marketplace they are entering.”
