The trick is not to be a master of everything, but to be knowledgeable about the tools at your disposal. This way, you can both be aware of the possibilities these tools offer and also be conversant with those people in the newsroom that are in place to develop advanced forms of media.

Interesting points, all. I particularly like the common-sense viewpoints on social media and comments – counter-hype. I’ve argued the point about the multiskilled multimedia multi-format journalist myself for years at the Newsplex and elsewhere. My definition of a multiskilled journalist is one who understands the strengths, weaknesses and interactions of all the tools in the journalist’s toolbox. Of course, having expertise in a good range of those tools is certainly a good thing. But as mentioned in myth 5, about journalism jobs, there are things at least as important as technical skill.
